Treatment

After taking a full case history and assessment, I use a variety of treatment methods to address your specific needs. A treatment session may be comprised of the following modalities. If you are not keen on a particular technique, no problem! You're the client, it's entirely your choice.

SOFT TISSUE THERAPY

Soft tissue therapy is a system which uses a deep understanding of the way the musculoskeletal system functions and dysfunctions. We then use a range of advanced treatment techniques within a framework of assessment and rehabilitation. In simpler terms, we not only look to relieve your pain; we establish how it came about, and how to avoid it in the future.

Techniques commonly used are massage (including deep tissue), soft tissue release, neuromuscular techniques, muscle energy techniques, myofascial release and positional release. A combination of active and passive techniques is used. This means treatment is something you actively participate in, rather than something that is just done to you.

MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE

In medical acupuncture pain and dysfunction are treated by inserting needles into the soft tissues. Medical acupuncture differs from Traditional Chinese Medicine style acupuncture in that we follow the Western approved anatomy and physiology. It is commonly used to treat trigger points and to alleviate musculoskeletal pain.

The needle length I use varies depending on the area being treated. I use A class aluminium handle needles, produced especially for sensitive patients. The needles are triple polished and silicone coated for pain free application.

ELECTROACUPUNCTURE

Electroacupuncture is a modified form of manual acupuncture in which an electric current is run through the needles. It is particularly useful for the management of musculoskeletal pain – especially tendinopathies, as well as reducing muscle spasticity. It tends to produce its effects much more quickly than manual acupuncture.

OSTEOPATHIC ARTICULATION AND MANIPULATION

Articulation is a gentle technique used to address pain and loss of mobility. It aims to increase the range of motion in a joint which has come dysfunctional.

Spinal and peripheral joint manipulation is yet another way of reducing pain and restoring normal movement. Contrary to what you might have heard, it is not 'realigning' you bones! The crack you hear - known as a cavitation - comes from nitrogen gas being released from the joint.

IASTM

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM) is a form of manual therapy in which tools are used to examine, manipulate and mobilise soft tissue structures. It is yet another method of addressing pain and dysfunction.

(Please note, IASTM is not the same as gua sha; a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine where damage is intentionally inflicted on the soft tissues to draw out 'stagnant blood'.)

MEDICAL KINESIOLOGY TAPING

Kinesiotaping is used to improve movement and reduce pain. It can also be used to control oedema and improve posture.

I only use official Rocktape kinesiotape due to its superior quality.
